The log

What we've been shipping

Suzuri is early and moves fast. Everything below landed in the fork itself — upstream Zed keeps shipping underneath, and those improvements arrive here too.

October 28, 2026

  • Suzuri keeps its own settings, apart from Zed's

Changing a setting, theme, or extension in one app used to change it in the other; Suzuri now has its own folder, carries your existing Suzuri data over on first launch, and can import Zed's settings from the welcome page.

October 24, 2026

  • Suzuri opens on newer Linux systems

On distributions with recent graphics drivers no window ever appeared; it does now.

October 22, 2026

  • Selecting text in a PDF lands where you drag

Selection used to start a little below the cursor and drift further off the more you scrolled.

October 14, 2026

  • Math in table cells

Formulas in a table used to show as raw LaTeX; they now render in line with the text, and a tall inline formula like a matrix gets a row tall enough instead of painting over its neighbors.

October 13, 2026

  • The app icon looks right on Linux, Windows, and macOS 26

Linux showed a placeholder or a white square and the macOS Dock drew a white border; Suzuri's icon now shows cleanly everywhere.

  • Jump to a page in a PDF

The page number in the status bar is now a field — type a number and press Enter, or use Go to Page — and the scrollbar, which used to drift off screen and throw you to the last page, stays put.

September 28, 2026

  • Bold, italic, links, and a word count for notes

⌘B and ⌘I toggle formatting even when live preview hides the asterisks, the rest sit under Document → Format, and the status bar counts only the words a journal would.

    4a668f2
  • Suzuri Light and Suzuri Dark by default

A fresh install opened in Zed’s themes rather than the one on this site; now it matches, and the welcome page offers Suzuri first.

    8193383

September 27, 2026

  • Notebooks ask which kernel to use

A notebook with no matching kernel used to start whatever Python environment the project had; now it waits on Select Kernel and asks when you run a cell.

    14e695a
  • Export notes to PDF, Word, HTML, LaTeX, and EPUB

Wikilinks, callouts, embedded notes, and citations come through intact, and PDFs need no TeX install — converted by Pandoc, under File or the new Document menu.

September 26, 2026

  • Cite straight from Zotero

⌘⌥C searches your project’s .bib and your running Zotero library, inserts the citation in the file’s own syntax, and a References heading fills itself in the note’s citation style.

    075ba52
  • Notebook kernels start, and find your files

A kernel could sit on “starting” forever and the sidebar’s run-all button did nothing; both work now, and relative paths like read_csv("train.csv") resolve next to the notebook.

September 22, 2026

  • Math renders sharp and stays inside the note

Formulas looked soft and washed out next to the prose, and a wide display formula spilled over the line numbers and off the right edge — both fixed.

    6017051
  • A PDF opens on its own

Opening one straight from Finder, with nothing else around it, showed “Binary files are not supported”; it now opens in the viewer, and the last page scrolls fully into view.

    f7e0e82

September 18, 2026

  • Jupyter notebooks: cells run on open, kernels shut down, charts fit

Running a cell while the kernel was still starting failed with a “Kernel Error”, closing a notebook left its Python process running, a wide chart was cut off on the right, and a project's new .venv was missing from the kernel picker — all fixed.

September 15, 2026

  • Auto-update

A new version now downloads in the background and offers “Restart to update”, where before Suzuri only opened the download page and left the rest to you.

    3c202da

September 12, 2026

  • Long link text no longer crashes the editor

A note with a link whose text had spaces and fell where a line wrapped could take Suzuri down before the window appeared.

September 8, 2026

  • PDFs open in remote projects

Opening a PDF in a project over SSH, Docker, or WSL failed with “No such file or directory” — the file now comes across from the remote machine and renders like a local one.

    731e7d9

September 7, 2026

  • Click a link to follow it, click a checkbox to tick it

A plain click on a wikilink or markdown link in live preview opens the note, file, or URL it names, and clicking a task checkbox toggles it instead of showing you its markdown — put the cursor next to either and the source comes back to edit.

September 5, 2026

  • Open a project on a remote machine

Every release now ships the server binary Suzuri copies onto an SSH host, so editing over a remote connection works with the fork instead of only with Zed.

    772c987

September 4, 2026

  • Suzuri runs on Linux

Releases now carry x86_64 and aarch64 Linux tarballs alongside the macOS and Windows builds, and the update notice points Linux users at the right download.

August 31, 2026

  • Citations that know your bibliography

Suzuri reads the .bib files in your vault, so typing @ offers your cite keys and hovering one shows the paper's title, authors, and year — a key that matches nothing gets underlined.

    8283354
  • Wide tables scroll instead of getting cut off

Columns now size to what is in them rather than sharing the width equally, and a table too wide for the pane scrolls in place instead of hiding its last columns for good.

    d3dffcf

August 30, 2026

  • PDF pages float on a grey canvas

White pages on a white background had no visible edges; they now sit as sheets on a grey desk, the way Word and Preview draw them, so page breaks and margins are easy to see.

    ac3bd33
  • Selecting and copying survive a recompile

After the PDF under a live preview recompiled, selecting text and copying could stop working until you reloaded — they don't anymore.

    8e372fe

August 29, 2026

  • Drag an image to a new place in the note

Moving an image used to mean cutting and pasting its markdown by hand — now pick it up and drop it where you want it, with the landing spot highlighted as you drag.

    d7feb03

August 28, 2026

  • Choose the LaTeX engine

The preview hardcoded one engine, so a paper whose style requires pdfTeX simply failed — you now pick pdflatex, xelatex, lualatex, latexmk, or your own command, and Suzuri offers to install a TeX Live that fetches whatever packages your document names.

    29b8af8
  • A recompiled PDF stops failing to parse

The viewer read the file while the compiler was still writing it and showed “Failed to parse PDF document” until you reopened the tab; it now waits for the file to look whole.

    65b1091

August 26, 2026

  • Obsidian callouts, embeds, and tags render in the preview

A block quote opening with [!warning] draws as a tinted card you can fold, ![[Some Note]] pulls that note's text in beside your own, and ==highlights==, #tags, and [^footnotes] stop showing their syntax.

    15f5e5e
  • Suzuri Light and Dark themes

Ported from VS Code's 2026 themes and tuned for the fork's own surfaces, so notebook cells and callouts sit clearly on the page.

    dcab204
  • Frontmatter is an editable properties table

The YAML or TOML block at the top of a note renders as a two-column card you edit in place — click a value to type, tick booleans, add a property — instead of raw text you have to keep well-formed yourself.

    6fb0eb4
  • Getting back to the raw markdown

A </> button beside the preview eye flips the whole buffer to source, and clicking a rendered heading, table, or image now reveals its markdown with the cursor where you clicked.

August 25, 2026

  • The PDF viewer stops leaking GPU memory

Every reload of a PDF leaked its old pages' GPU memory — live Typst and LaTeX previews hit it hardest, since each recompile rewrites the PDF. Fixed by David Turnbull, Suzuri's first outside contribution.

    3406cd3
  • The app calls itself Suzuri

The welcome and onboarding screens, the app menu, the About window, and the CLI's help text were all still saying Zed.

    16c1dcd

August 24, 2026

  • Images in the preview stay current

Overwriting an image with a new version — re-cropping a screenshot over its own name — kept showing the old bitmap until you renamed the file; it now reloads in place, and a widened image no longer paints over the text below it.

    19266b6

August 22, 2026

  • Jupyter notebooks open as notebooks

Zed builds a notebook editor but ships it switched off, so .ipynb files opened as plain JSON — and once switched on, saving silently destroyed every cell output. Both are fixed: open, run, and save a notebook.

    8e83965
  • The Copy button in code blocks copies

Clicking it used to just drop the block into edit mode without touching the clipboard.

    063ff5d

August 21, 2026

  • Suzuri tells you when a new release is out

A notification links straight to the download for your OS — installed builds had no way to hear about updates before.

    112aefa

August 20, 2026

  • Math renders in markdown buffers

Inline $…$ and display $$…$$ LaTeX draw as math while you write — it never rendered before, it just sat there as source — with RaTeX doing the typesetting.

    8fab124

August 18, 2026

  • Windows builds actually finish

Long paths are enabled before the build and partial builds are cached, so the Windows installer stops timing out.

    bd4f14d

August 17, 2026

  • macOS builds are signed and notarized

Open the DMG and drag Suzuri to Applications — no Gatekeeper detour.

    2333b18

August 16, 2026

  • Typst and LaTeX live preview

Write in one pane, watch the PDF update in the other a second after you stop typing. Compilers install themselves the first time you need them.

    4c0c39b
  • A native PDF viewer

Continuous scroll, zoom, and real text selection, built on hayro. It reloads in place when the file changes on disk.

    36dcb3c
  • Wikilinks, backlinks, and link diagnostics

markdown-oxide ships as a built-in language server, so [[links]] complete, follow, and report themselves when broken — no extension to install.

    9a6432f
  • Citations and image embeds render inline

Pandoc-style citation keys and Obsidian ![[embeds]] display as chips and images in the buffer.

    0bb9c96

August 10, 2026

  • Editable tables

Markdown tables render as tables and stay editable in place, Obsidian-style.

    33ddef0

August 9, 2026

  • Reveal by token, resizable images, wikilink rendering

The line under your cursor shows only the markup you are actually touching, rather than unwrapping the whole line.

    1628629
  • Drag files in to attach them

Dropped files copy into the vault and link correctly, with a setting for where they land.

    3062577

August 8, 2026

  • Obsidian-style markdown live preview

The first commit of the fork: markdown renders in the buffer itself and reveals its source when your cursor touches it.
